Local teams battle before break

Circle your calendars for Jan. 31. That is when the Fayette County and McIntosh basketball teams will meet again. If their games are anything like Friday night's games, you will not want to miss them.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs lost to Fayette County 57-56, but made things interesting at the end. They were down 55-53 with 24 seconds left and missed a chance to tie when they missed two foul shots. Fayette County strecthed their lead to three points when they hit two free throws with seven seconds left. As time expired McIntosh hit a two-pointer and appeared to get fouled, but no call was made and Fayette County won by one point. Lindsay Murphy led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 20 points.

In the boys game, McIntosh edged out the Tigers 58-56 in overtime. Fayette County led by five at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to seven points at the half. The Tigers went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter, while McIntosh was scoreless for over four minutes. The Chiefs came back in the second half as Sterling Brown connected on four three pointers and scored 16 points and the Chiefs had their first lead of the night with two and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. The two teams battled back and forth and at the end of the third quarter, Fayette County led 46-44.

The fourth quarter continued the lead changes of the final minutes of the third quarter and the score was tied 55-55 with 40 seconds left. Neither Fayette County or McIntosh could connect on their final shots of the quarter and the game went to overtime. The Chiefs then played ball and clock control hitting a basket two minutes in and then connecting on a free throw with a minute remaining to claim the win. Dexter Manley led Fayette County in scoring with 21 points.

In other games, the Starr's Mill Lady Panthers fell in overtime to Warner Robins on Thursday night in the Bear Brawl Tournament, 51-44. The Starr's Mill boys lost to Warner Robins on Friday night in the same tournament, 85-47. Also on Friday night, Sandy Creek's boys defeated East Coweta 67-53, with Kevin Craig scoring 26 points for the Patriots, while the Lady Patriots fell to the Lady Indians, 63-38. On Saturday, Starr's Mill's boys beat Central Macon 71-43.
