Starr's Mill and McIntosh wrestling programs do well at Challenge By MICHAEL

McIntosh and Starr's Mill went to the Program Challenge wrestling meet over the weekend and both teams were joined by their middle school counterparts, Booth Middle School and Rising Starr Middle School. Starr's Mill and Rising Starr placed first while McIntosh and Booth placed third overall. The tournament began on Friday night and Starr's Mill faced and defeated Grayson - 60-18; Wesleyan - 71-3; Marist - 75-0 and Union Grove 51-21. Starr's Mill had seven wrestlers go 4-0: Corey Radcliffe (103), Devon King (112), Patrick Bates (119), Mike Cosper (130), Tyler Kourajian (135), Matt Hartpence (145) and Kyle Verzello (160). Jordan Powers (171) went 3-0. Bruce Ferguson (125) went 3-1 as did Nick Bennett (152), Matt Milner (189) and Bradley Connor (215). Davey Woods (140) went 2-2 as did Kevin Pierce (275). During the tournament on Saturday, Starr's Mill had eight champions of their weight class: Radcliffe, King, Cosper, Kourajian, Bennett, Verzello, Powers and Pierce. Bates, Ferguson, Woods, Hartpence and Connor placed second and Milner placed fourth. Rising Starr produced five champions of their weight class, six second place finishers, one third place finishers and one fourth place finisher. Champions were Jason Allen (75), Kevin Thurber (80), Brandon Ferguson (85), Derek King (90) and Jeff Koziol (110). Second place finishers were Kevin O'Brien (95), Trent Freeman (115) Keith Manching (127), Jeff Messer (157), Tim Jones (185) and Sean Surrles (275) while John Donaldson (105) placed third and Kyle Trahan (147) placed fourth. Place winners for McIntosh were Justin Edwards (130) second place; Andy Ellinas (152) third place; Cameron Hall (160) second place; Josh Allison (171) fourth place; Thomas Beck (189) third place and Darryl Walton (215) first place. For the Booth Warriors, Chris Chapman (127), Landis Ford (137), and Zac Gilmer (157) each won their weight class. Jacob Brandlehner (75) took fourth, Jessy Toscano (85) took second, Shane Beard (90) took second, Doug Taylor (95) took fourth, Brian Huefner (120) took fourth, and JJ Pigott (167) took second. This Friday and Saturday all four local high school teams will be competing in the South Metro Invitational at Stockbridge High School. The tournament begins on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. and starts on Saturday at 9 a.m.
