Starr's Mill swims past McIntosh Starr's Mill showed just how tough they have become to beat in swimming. The Panthers beat the Chiefs by a wide margin, even though McIntosh had some good competition. The final score for the Starr's Mill girls team was 267 to McIntosh's 189, while the boys finished with 266 points ahead of the Chief's 215. Coach J.B. Campbell was happy to report that two more individual events and two more relays qualified for the state meet in February. Senior Kenny Jubb had a great night by adding the 50 yard freestyle (22.63) to his state cuts. He previously had qualified in the 100 and 200 free. Jubb also finished first in the 100 free (49.77). Both times are personal bests for Jubb. Junior Brittany Stevens also added to her qualifiying events by placing first in the 50 free (25.97).In addition Stevens was first in the 500 free (5:43.99) and had previously made a state cut time in the 100 butterfly (100.99). The new relay events that have qualified for the state meet are the boys medley relay team of sophomore Noah Copeland, senior Chris Frederick, senior Josh Strickland, and Jubb (1:49.74) and the girls 200 free relay team of freshman Mackenzie Garrot, senior Laurel Surratt, senior Brittney Wester and senior Samantha Hudson (1:54.48). Starr's Mill has qualified four other relay events from the previous swim meet in Conyers. Some other highlights of the night were Copeland's first place finish in the 500 free (5.16.90) and Garrot's first place finish in the 100 breast (1:14.84) as well as the 200 individual medley (2:31.56). Both swimmers have already qualified for individual state events. Heather Highsmith placed first in the 200 free (2:14.64), Brittney Wester was first in the 100 free (1:03.89) and Georgia Highsmith finished first in the 100 back (1:08.07). Panther relay teams also did extremely well. The boys 200 free relay team of Haynes Finney, Frederick, Jared Siri and Jubb finished first (1:41.44). The girls 200 medley team of G. Highsmith, Garrot, Stevens and Hudson finished first (2:03.30), which is almost six seconds faster than the state qualifying time. Also finishing first was the boys 400 free relay team of Strickland, Paul Daniel, Scott Adams and Copeland (3:55.83). Other swimmers with at least one third place finish are Dustin Martin, Michael Schroder, Kris Pretzer, Daniel Baily, Patrick Teague, Josh Jiricek, Katie Ham, Jamie Grace, Libby Hardison, Amanda Perersson, Jessica Lovelace and Kelsey Surratt. McIntosh had 10 state qualifiers at the meet. Lindsay Lochridge was the only individual qualifier with a time of 1:15.74 in the 100 yard breast stroke. Four relays achieved state qualifying times: the girls 200 yard medley team of Lochridge, Caroline Clark, Julie White and Tiffany Grant with a time of 2:07.85, the girls 200 yard freestyle team of White, lochridge, Grant and Anna Lione with a time of 1:54.67, the boys 200 yard medle relay team of Thomas Lucak, Chris Koperniak, Jeb Beard and Chris Lee with a time of 1:50.60 and the boys 200 yard freestyle relay team of Koperniak, Lucak, Lee and Josh Obertein with a time of 1:41.66. "I'm proud of our swimmers' performances against such a strong team," said Coach Tommy Stockdale. "We have a young team with many new swimmers, which gives us a strong base from which to build." McIntosh continued the weekend by heading to Carrollton on Saturday morning for the Third Annual Carroll County Schools Holiday Invitational. The meet began on Friday and despite not competing on Friday the McIntosh boys placed second overall and the girls place third overall. The girls 200 yard freestyle team of White, Lochridge, Lione and Grant earned a second place finish and had another state qualifying time. Lucak was the top scorer for the boys with first place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.74) and 100 yard backstroke (1:00.67). Other first place finishers were Lochridge in the 100 yard butterfly, White in the 100 yard backstroke and the boys 400 yard free relay team of Koperniak, Lucak, Lee and Riki Otaki. Starr's Mill will face Sandy Creek on Dec. 13 at Kedron, while McIntosh will be off until Jan. 10 when they take on Fayette County at Kedron.
