Basketball teams take on region foes in first part of season By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Starr's Mill's basketball teams traveled to Fayette County High School on Friday night for the first meeting of the season between the region rivals. Fayette County emerged the winners in both games, while McIntosh's teams handled Mundy's Mill and Sandy Creek faced Pebblebrook. Fayette County's girls defeated Starr's Mill 44-36. The Lady Panthers had an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Lady Tigers led 20-17 at the half. Fayette County kept a 28-26 lead at the end of the third quarter but the fourth quarter was wild as there were five lead changes between the two teams. The Lady Tigers tightened their defense and scored seven points in a little over 30 seconds to take control and seize the win. Jenny Norman led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 12 points. In the boys game, Starr's Mill had a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 27-26 lead at the half. They did get into some foul trouble though as each of the five starters picked up two fouls a piece in the first half. The Panthers had a seven point lead in the third quarter but the Tigers charged back and took a 38-37 lead entering the final quarter. The fourth quarter was close and each team had the lead at times. Starr's Mill had a 49-47 lead late but could not hang on and lost 51-49. Fayette's Dexter Manley had a ferocious fourth quarter scoring eight of his 14 points, while Dorian Worell added 12 points. Andy Drum scored 14 for the Panthers and Caleb Graham added 10 points. In Peachtree City on Friday night, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs opened with five straight 3-point baskets and never let up in an 86-38 victory at home Friday. "The early 3-point shooting set the tone for the night," said Coach Steve Kidd. "Our girls shot well, moved the ball well and made good decisions all night." Lindsey Murphy had 25 points and Alice Lowery 15, as the Lady Chiefs ended with five scorers in double figures. Seniors Murphy and Lowery and sophomore Kristen McKillop did most of the three point damage, while Haynes Kleimeyer and Sarah Cage were effective inside. The extraordinary opening minutes saw McIntosh take a 15 to 1 lead. Mundy's Mill repeatedly called time out to make adjustments, but by halftime the Lady Chiefs had stretched their advantage to 46-16. Coach Kidd had only eight players available following an injury to senior Lisa Brundrett. All eight scored before a large home crowd that, in addition to the girls' victory, enjoyed a 66-53 win by the boys' team and performances by the McIntosh step team and Chiefettes dancers. Sandy Creek took on Pebblebrook on Friday night. The Lady Patriots lost to the Lady Falcons 54-32. "We played poorly against a very good club," said Coach Jim Waller, who was more impressed with the team's focus on Saturday night in their 60-36 win over Forest Park. Ashley Jones scored 16 points in the win while Jennifer Jaracz added 10 points. The Sandy Creek boys defeated Pebblebrook, 63-52 on Friday. Andrew Gardner scored 14 points and pulled in 12 rebounds, while Kevin Craig added 12 points and nine rebounds and Cornelius Brown scored 10 points. In the game against Forest Park, the Patriots lost at the buzzer 54-51. Craig scored 23 points and pulled in seven rebounds while Kerry Atkinson added 14 points and Brown added 11 points. On Saturday, Starr's Mill's boys and girls played and defeated Mundy's Mill. The Lady Panthers won and were led by Norman's 20 points, while Ashley Marine got a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling in 13 rebounds. The boys won 69-32. Chris Hadzick netted 14 points while Reid Bosworth scored 10. Games to be played this weekend will include McIntosh hosting East Coweta on Friday and playing at Landmark on Saturday, Sandy Creek at Woodward Academy on Friday and at Chapel Hill on Saturday, Fayette County hosting Mundy's Mill on Friday and playing at Carver on Saturday and Starr's Mill at Riverdale on Friday. Friday games begin with the girls games at 7 p.m. followed by the boys games, while Saturday's games begin at 6 p.m.
