Basketball teams start season, holiday tournaments

With Thanksgiving comes Thanksgiving basketball tournaments. McIntosh and Fayette County are playing in the Mt. Zion tournament, while Sandy Creek is playing in the Morrow tournament

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs let one slip away in the first round of the Mt. Zion Tournament Saturday night in Jonesboro. The Lady Chiefs led most of the way and by as much nine points in the fourth quarter but lost to the Mt. Zion Lady Bulldogs 44-42.

The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-6 but McIntosh built a 23-19 lead at the half thanks to good shooting from Marci nessing and Kristen McKillop. The Lady Chiefs started to get into foul trouble and Mt. Zion went to the line 29 times in the game. Nine players scored for McIntosh, led by Haynes Kleimeyer and Lindsay Murphy. The Lady Chiefs play again on Tuesday and Saturday as the tournament continues.

In other girls games, Fayette County's Lady Tigers got a 69-61 win over South Cobb, Starr's Mill fell to Eagle's Landing, 54-52 and Our Lady of Mercy defeated W.D. Mohammed 53-35. On Friday, the Lady Bobcats defeated Greenforest Christian 54-47.

In boys games, Starr's Mill lost a sloppy game to Eagle's Landing, 43-41. The Golden Eagles led for almost the entire game and had built a nine point lead in the fourth quarter. Starr's Mill was one for 17 from behind the arc and shot 26 percent from the floor. Caleb Graham led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Mike Mock added 10 points. Starr's Mill played at carver Columbus last night ad will host Northgate on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., following the girls game which begins at 6 p.m.

In other boys scores, Landmark Christian fell to Centennial 91-87 and Our Lady of Mercy lost to Greenforest Christian 56-21.
