Starr's Mill and Landmark advance to second round of state playoffs

The state football playoffs began last Friday night and Starr's Mill and Landmark Christian advanced to the second round with convincing wins while Sandy Creek fell to the Ware County Gators in Waycross.

Starr's Mill (9-2) was in control all night in their 41-7 win over Tift County. The Panthers first drive lasted three and a half minutes and culminated in a two yard touchdown run from Chris Strauch. After the defense held the Blue Devils to another three ad out series, the Panthers put together a four minute scoring drive with Johnny Edwards scoring a touchdown with a seven-yard run. The second quarter was a little sloppy for Starr's Mill with a number of penalties, a missed field goal and a fumble towards the end of the first half but they would recover and put Tift County further behind in the second half.

Seventeen seconds into the second half, Edwards scored his second touchdown of the game with a 74-yard run, Strauch scored his second touchdown over a minute and a half later with a 36-yard touchdown run. Strauch wasn't done yet, scoring four minutes later with an 85-yard touchdown run. He finished with a school record 206 yards rushing and is also the school's first 1,000-yard rusher. Kyle McCreary added a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the win.

Starr's Mill gets another home game ths Friday when they host Northside-Warner Robins (9-2), the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year with a 35-7 win. Northside-Warner Robins advanced to the second round with a 49-14 win over Effingham County.

Landmark Christian (11-0) rolled over Jefferson last Friday with a 48-7 win. The War Eagles piled up 500 yards of offense and got another huge game from quarterback Alex Mortensen, four touchdown passes and 274 yards, and Eric Worrell, two receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Sean Hill and Dylan hanes added to the onslaught of offense with over 70 yards rushing each.

The War Eagles will host Lincoln County (7-4) this week. Lincoln County advanced to the second round with a 39-15 win over Bremen. The game will be played at Sandy Creek High School at 7 p.m.

Sandy Creek's season came to an end last Friday with a 42-17 loss to the Ware County Gators. The Patriots (7-4) got a field goal from Jenna Thomason in the first half but found themselves down 28-3 at the break. Scoing for the Patriots in the second half were Will Judson, who ran back a kick 94 yards for a touchdown, and Phillip Hyde, who rushed for over 160 yards on the night and a touchdown.
