Landmark volleyball finishes second The Lady War Eagles found out how hard it is to repeat a State Championship when they met a determined Athens Academy, recently in the AA/A State Finals at Westminster. After a hard fought match, Athens prevailed and Landmark Christian became the 2002 Volleyball State Runner-up. Overall, however, 2002 was a very successful season. The team finished with a 47-12 record, an Area Championship, a final ranking of fifth among all classifications, several individual awards and records and many team state records. Ruthie Stacks, Rachael Brannon and Ashley Mead were named to the All Area 4 AA/A Team and Lauren Mason was named the Area Player of the Year. Stacks, Nikki Hanners, and Emily Burslem were Senior All-Star nominees. The team's 47 wins were the most for a Landmark volleyball team. The Lady War Eagles also hold many team state records. A few are: total aces - 502, total kills - 1410, Team Kill Percentage - .385, and total digs - 2490. Mason, Stacks and Hanners are also on the state record boards in the career categories. These records and rankings can be viewed on www.georgiavolleyball.com. According to Coach Barb Mason, one of the highlights of Landmark's season, however, was when the team was able to minister in prayer with most of our opponents following our matches. At the State Finals, in front of a huge crowd and TV33, the venue fell completely silent as Landmark and Athens players and coaches circled up and Burslem prayed. "Our girls received statewide praise for their court demeanor, overall skill, discipline and teamwork," said Coach Mason. With the loss of four extremely valuable seniors (Stacks, Burslem, Hanners and Jessica Dull), the younger players (Katie Thornton, Rachael Brannon, Lauren Mason, Holly Hurst, Kelsey Muse, Mary Lacis and Ashley Mead), will have to work hard next year to get the team to the state finals again. "Where we may not have understood our loss in the finals," Coach Mason said, "we felt God's hand on our season and trusted in what we wore on our kneepads everyday...God controls all things."
