Three Fayette County high schools are sending their softball teams to Valdosta on Friday to compete in the first round of the state softball tournament.

Fayette County High School's Lady Tigers won the area 4-AAAAA championship with a 10-0 win over East Coweta last thursday, a 5-1 win over Starr's Mill on Friday and a 2-1 win over Starr's Mill on Saturday. Both games against the Lady Panthers went to extra innings. In the first game against Starr's Mill, Katie Gaspierik scored the first run for Fayette County while Starr's Mill tied the game with an RBI from Brittany Matthews. The tie was broken in the eighth when Alison Horne hit a grand slam. In Saturday's game, Stefanie Norman drove in the tie breaking run in the eighth inning for Fayette County.

"We played three games that went to the tiebreaker inning," said Lady Tigers head coach Jill Joiner. "Those games are important because it games in the state tournament are more likely to go that way."

In other games in the tournament, Starr's Mill defeated McIntosh twice, once by a score of 6-1 and once by a score of 1-0, while McIntosh got wins over East Coweta 7-2 and Newnan 9-0.

State sectional play starts in Valdosta at 4 p.m. when East Coweta faces Lowndes and Fayette County faces Lee County. Should both teams win East Coweta will face Stockbridge or Brunswick at 8 p.m. and Fayette County will face Henry County or Glynn Academy at 8 p.m. McIntosh will face Tift County at 6 p.m. and would face the winner of the Eagle's Landing/Groves match at 8 p.m., while Starr's Mill plays Valdosta at 6 p.m. and would face the winner of the Wayne County/Jonesboro game at 8 p.m. if they win.
