Region wins put Panthers and Patriots in good positions

It finally felt like football weather last Friday and several local teams gave solid performances on the field. Starr's Mill (6-2) has got a grasp on the top spot in Region 4-AAAAA after defeating Newnan 27-6 on Friday. The Panthers got touchdown runs from Deante Battle, Chris Strauch and Johnny Edwards, whom the fans affectionately dubbed "Johnny Five" after his secodn touchdown run of the evening, which he set up with a 66 yard run. Though conditons were wet and Starr's Mill fumbled several balls, Newnan only capitalized once with a one yard touchdown in the third quarter. The Panthers are now 4-1 in the region with games against McIntosh this Friday and Fayette County the Friday after that. Riverdale and Lovejoy both have 3-1 records in the region and will face each other in the final game of the season, while East Coweta and Newnan are at 3-2. Landmark Christian (6-0) hosted Heard County (5-1) and won 46-23. The War Eagles were led by quarterback Alex Mortensen who threw for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. Eric Worrell had eight catches for over 100 yards and two touchdowns and Sean Hill produced a safety on defense. Landmark Christian hits the road this week to take on Whitefield Academy (1-6). Sandy Creek (4-2) got a 24-14 win over North Clayton and improved their record in the region to 4-1, which is good for a three way tie with Woodward Academy and Pebblebrook. The Patriots got touchdowns from Phillip Hyde, who rushed for over 100 yards again and scored twice, Jamal Rome and Calvin Johnson, who once again had over 100 yards receiving. Fayette County played in Columbus last Thursday as they took on Carver, Columbus. The Tigers (2-6) trailed Carver 7-6 at the half and took a 9-7 lead with Rick Deraney's third field goal of the night. Fayette County had the lead until Carver's final drive, which culminated in a touchdown run from their quarterback. Fayette County will close out their season with a game against Riverdale at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro on Friday and then a home game against Starr's Mill on Nov. 8. McIntosh (1-7) had a tough time handling Riverdale (5-1), which defeated the Chiefs 53-0.It doesn't get any easier for McIntosh who must travel down the road on Friday to take on Starr's Mill. Our Lady of Mercy (2-5) played at Mt. Zion, Carroll last Friday and lost 36-6. Sam Etuk rushed for over 100 yards and scored the lone touchdown for the Bobcats. It was the fourth consecutive game that Etuk rushed for over 100 yards. Our Lady of Mercy will be without their top receiver Josh Flores for the remainder of the season due to a broken collarbone. Flores has also seen time as the team's backup quarterback this season and will be missed. Ralph Woolfolk, the team's starting quarterback, sprained his ankle the other night and is doubtful for this week's game against Bowdon. Freshman Brett Bartels is expected to get the start.
