Tigers and Bobcats get second wins of season, Panthers and Patriots drop region games

McIntosh traveled to Fayette County High School last Friday in hopes of spoiling the Tigers' homecoming game, but Fayette County prevailed 23-14.

The Chiefs took an early 3-0 lead when Robert Huefner kicked a 22-yard field goal but the Chiefs would not score again until the fourth quarter.

Fayette County (2-5) got an interception from George Harkness with about three minutes to go in the first quarter which set up a touchdown. Quarterback Jeff Crisp connected with Steven West with a nine-yard touchdown pass to give Fayette County the lead. Crisp and West would conect again less than a minute later after McItosh fumbled the ball on the second play of their ensuing drive. The Tigers made it 17-3 at the half with a 40 yard field goal from Rick Deraney.

The score remained the same in the second half until Huefner kicked a 48-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Fayette responded with about five minutes to go in the game when Crisp connected with David Roberson with a touchdown pass. The Tigers did not convert the extra point attempt and had a 23-6 lead. McIntosh scored after Cameron Hall made a 60-yard reception setting up a four yard touchdown run by Cortez Phillips. The Chiefs defense forced Fayette County to punt on its next drive but the offense could not establish a drive.

McIntosh (1-6) will host Riverdale (4-1) this Friday, while Fayette County travels to Columbus Memorial Stadium tomorrow to take on Carver, Columbus (3-3).

Starr's Mill (5-2) has won a lot of close games late this season. They were on the opposite end of that good fortune last Friday night as they missed two fourth quarter field goals and East Coweta scored two touchdowns in four minutes to get the 32-28 win.

The Indian defense held the region's leading rusher, Chris Strauch, to 27 yards, while the Panther's Deante Battle rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Other scorers for the Panthers were quarterback Patrick mullinix and Josh Antones who had a 60-yard touchdown reception from a pass by Mullinix.

Starr's Mill hosts Newnan (4-3) this Friday, while the Indians (3-4) take on Lovejoy (4-2) at Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton. Starr's Mill, East Coweta and Newnan are all 3-1 in the region, while Lovejoy and Riverdale are both 2-1.

Sandy Creek hosted Douglas County, the fifth-ranked team in AAAA, last Friday and lost 44-15. The Patriots fell behind early, giving up 24 points in the first quarter. Phillip Hyde rushed for 129 yards for Sandy Creek while quarterback Dusty Bennett connected with Jamal Rome and Calvin Johnson for touchdowns. The Patriots (3-2) will travel to Tara Stadium in Jonesboro to take on North Clayton (1-4) this Friday.

Our Lady of Mercy got a big win over Walker last Friday, 27-7. Ralph Woolfolk had 138 yards rushing with one touchdown and 85 yards passing for two touchdowns in the win. Sam Etuk rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. Etuk and Josh Flores also had an interception a piece. Matt Gill led the defense with eight tackles. Our Lady of Mercy (2-4) will play at Mt. Zion, Carroll (1-4) this Friday.

Landmark Christian (5-0) had a bye last week. The War Eagles will host Heard County (5-0) this Friday.

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
