Softball teams prepare for area tournament

The area softball tournament for Region 4-AAAAA is scheduled to start on Monday. As tuneups for the playoffs, the local teams have been facing each other. On Tuesday of this week McIntosh faced Mundy's Mill, while Fayette County and Starr's Mill battled.

The Lady Chiefs defeated Mundy's Mill 16-0. Lead off hitter Kim Bevillard had two hits, while Renae Clarke had a double, two RBIs and scored three runs. Starting pitcher Lily yarbrough also scored three runs. On the mound she struck out nine batters on her way to a no hitter. Other producers on offense for McIntosh were Kristy Cline, Kaitilin Moran and Jordan Wiegele, who also crossed home plate three times.

Fayette County faced Starr's Mill at home on Tuesday and won 2-0. The Lady Tigers got two hits while pitcher Bonnie Bynum struck out 14 batters and limited the Lady Panthers to one hit. Pamela O'Neal drove in a run for Fayette County and crossed the plate herself. Stephanie Phillips also scored a run in the game.

On Wednesday, McIntosh and Fayette County squared off one last time before the tournament. Fayette County won their first meeting this season and also got the win on Wednesday, despite making three errors. The Lady Tigers outhit McIntosh 5-3 and got the 3-1 win. Alison Horne was the hero for Fayette County, going two for four at the plate, driving in a run and scoring two herself. Bonnie Bynum was the winning pitcher, striking out 17 McIntosh batters.

The region tournament will begin on Monday at Redwine Park in Tyrone.
