Rivals meet on gridiron tonight

It seems like every week from now until the end of the football season will feature some big games for our local teams.

In terms of region standings, the biggest games are between Starr's Mill and East Coweta, Newnan and Riverdale, and Sandy Creek and Douglas County, but there are also two games between two sets of rivals that will also be very intriguing. Fayette County will host McIntosh tonight for their homecoming game while Our Lady of Mercy will host Walker.

Starr's Mill (5-1) is undefeated in the region. They travel to Garland-Shoemake Stadium at East Coweta High School intent on keeping it that way. The Indians (2-4) are 2-1 in the region and would love to even things out with the Panthers in the region standings. Last week, Starr's Mill played what could go down as one of the best football games anyone has ever seen. They scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to beat Lovejoy, 35-34. The Panthers won't ever give up so East Coweta must be ready to play a full four quarters. East Coweta lost to Riverdale last week, 23-13. Riverdale, which is 1-1 in region standings, will host Newnan, the other 3-0 team in the region tonight.

Sandy Creek (3-1) will host undefeated and sixth-ranked Douglas County (5-0) tonight. The Patriots defeated Lithia Springs 32-14 last week and got a lot of help from freshman Brent Brewer, who blocked two punts. Sandy Creek has won three games in a row and looks like they are starting to click on both sides of the ball. They will have to play their best game of the season so far tonight. Douglas County is an extremely skilled team that makes big plays. They are averaging 40.2 points per game on offense and will capitalize on any mistakes.

It is always a fun game when McIntosh meets Fayette County and this year the game looks to be very exciting. Both teams are 1-5 and both teams have played better than their records would suggest. McIntosh has been able to run the ball well against many of their opponents and has lost several games due to late mistakes. Fayette County has had a bad habit of falling to teams early and then having their impressive comebacks fall short. Both teams will come into this game looking to get their second win of the season and establish bragging rights for the year. This will be a good one.

Our Lady of Mercy (1-4) lost to a big Blessed Trinity team last week but is hopeful that they will get back on the winning side tonight against Walker (2-3). The Bobcats faced Walker twice last year during their half varsity season and won both matches. They are also hoping to have several players back with the squad this week after they had to sit out for academic reasons. Walker has lost to Blessed Trinity by a similar score this season and beat Whitefield Academy, who Our Lady of Mercy also got a win against. This should be an evenly matched game and the Bobcats will definitely be hungry.

Northgate (0-4) will travel to Tara Stadium in Jonesboro to take on Forest Park (1-2). The Vikings have had some trouble scoring some points this year but could get a win tonight if they can control the tempo of the game and force some Forest park turnovers. Landmark Christian (5-0) is off this week. The War Eagles will be back next week with a home game against Heard County.
