Teams face formidable foes in fourth week
By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The third week of the high school football season is upon us and teams are either looking to continue their winning ways or to right their ships fast. The only home games in the area tonight are Fayette County vs. Newnan and Northgate vs. North Clayton. Fayette County (1-1) defeated Sandy Creek 39-26 last week and has to be somewhat impressed with its balanced offensive attack. The Tigers had success on special teams thanks to two kickoffs returned for touchdowns from David Roberson and both Jeff Crisp and Hunter Rozakos threw touchdown passes in last week's win. Newnan (1-1) steamrolled Northgate in the first week but lost to Carrollton last week 34-20. The Cougars have a potent offense and are looking to show their region opponents that they mean business this season. Northgate (0-1) was off last week as were their opponents the North Clayton Eagles (0-1), who lost to Riverdale in the first week of the season 35-6. Both teams would like to get that first win of the season and improve to .500 tonight, so fans should expect a battle. Both the Vikings and eagles only netted six points a piece in their only game thus far, so expect the offense to look better tonight too. As for the away games tonight perhaps none is as important as East Coweta's game at Cherokee (2-0). The Indians are 0-2 so far and their opponents have almost scored 100 points already. East Coweta needs to right its ship now to remain in the hunt for a region title and a trip to the state playoffs. The Indians have the talent to compete and win the game but the question is whether they can slow down the Cherokee offense. Starr's Mill (1-1) lost to Cherokee 40-20 last week and hopes to get back to their winning ways against Spalding (1-1) tonight. Spalding lost to Monticello last week 37-14. The Panthers have a solid running game and a good defense and you can bet that any mistakes made last week will not be repeated this week. McIntosh (1-1) is the team traveling the furthest tonight as they head down to face the Lowndes Vikings (2-0). The Chiefs looked good in the opening game against Eagle's Landing but had some trouble last week at Upson-Lee. McIntosh needs to play a perfect game and their defense will need to make some big stops and get a few key turnovers to get the win tonight. Sandy Creek (0-1) travels to Alexander (1-0) tonight. The Patriots came back from a 17-7 deficit last week to take the lead but could not hang on against the Tigers. One should expect a full four quarters of intensity from Sandy Creek tonight and perhaps another big game from Phillip Hyde who had over 200 yards rushing last week. Alexander defeated Hiram 20-12 in their first game of the season. Landmark Christian (2-0) is off to a good start this season. Their offense was the star in the first game and last week the defense propelled them to a 36-7 win over Decatur. Tonight they travel to take on Brookstone (0-2), which lost to Heard County 26-9 last week. The War Eagles will hope to have both the offense and defense clicking on all cylinders tonight, giving them a perfect record thus far. The Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats are 0-2 and face a formidable foe in Temple (0-2). The Bobcats nearly had a victory over Aquinas last week and are very hungry for their first win of the season. Temple has some talented players but Our Lady of Mercy has their share as well including Ralph Woolfolk who threw a pass for a touchdown and intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown last week. All games scheduled for tonight will start at 7:30 p.m.
