Christ the King breaks ground for new sanctuary in Coweta

After nearly six years as a congregation in Peachtree City, Christ the King Charismatic Episcopal church has broken ground for a new sanctuary on 11.5 acres on Ga. Hwy. 34 in Coweta County.

Construction of a 3,200 sq. ft. initial phase sanctuary is currently underway. Current plans call for the facility to seat 192 individuals with a later expansion planned to accommodate between 350 and 400 worshipers. JTV General Contractors of Roswell and the architectural firm of CDH Partners of Marietta are working with the congregation to construct a facility that will be ready for occupancy by fall, 2002. David Fjeran of Newnan, a member of the church who has extensive construction experience, is serving as liaison between the church and the architect and contractor.

The right Rev. John Holloway, bishop of the Diocese of Georgia, officiated at the groundbreaking service on a recent Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Canon David Monroe, canon liturgist for the Diocese of Georgia, served as master of ceremonies for the event and coordinated the liturgical marking off of the "sacred space" that will eventually become the sanctuary of the church.

Russ Marhefka Jr. of Senoia led the congregation in worship on the grounds. Clergy from other churches in the Georgia Diocese also were present.

"We are tremendously excited that what we have been praying and planning for is coming to pass," said Fr. David Epps, rector of Christ the King. "A great many people have given and sacrificed so that we might have a permanent home."

Epps went on to commend the staff of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, especially Greg Hall, director of the facility, for the hospitality they have extended for almost six years.

"When we approached Greg Hall almost six years ago," Epps said, "we were a brand new congregation with a handful of people. We asked Greg if it might be possible for us to use their chapel for six months to a year while we made other plans. They have been the most gracious and hospitable hosts that one could possibly imagine. We have now grown to a congregation of about 215 adherents. A great part of the reason we have been able to buy land and begin the construction of a building has been the support of Greg and the Carmichael-Hemperley staff."

While the new facility is under construction, Christ the King will continue to meet Sundays at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home located at Ga. Hwy. 74 and Old Senoia Rd.
