Doodle the Clown conducts clown camp at 'The Fred'

Doodle Marie Mayhem will teach kids how to become a clown at a Clown Camp sponsored by the PTC Parks and Recreation Dept. The Camp will be held at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (The Fred) June 24 to 28, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday June 28. The Camp will have two performances at the Fred, 2 p.m. for Camp McIntosh and the general public and again at 4 p.m. for parents, friends and everybody else who missed the earlier show. Each camper will become a joey (new clown) and receive his/her clown name and a diploma.

The camp will be for students aged 10 to 18 and cost $95.00. All aspiring clowns will learn how to apply full face makeup, design their own costumes, write a script for the performance, develop a character, do improvisational comedy, do simple backdrops, learn magic tricks, do balloon sculpting, and how to entertain the public as a new clown.

Doodle has been performing as a professional clown since 1990 when she graduated from the International School of Performing Arts in Florida.

Doodle performs before thousands of people each year and conducts clown camps throughout the entire south and southwestern parts of the U.S. Her favorite time of the year is summer when she performs and teaches kids at Camp Breathe Easy, for children with asthmatic conditions and Camp Wanna KLOT, a camp for children with hemophilia.

"Doodle in real life was an elementary school teacher and is one of the very best entertainers we have contracted with to interact with kids," according to Bernice Wassell, youth coordinator for Peachtree City Recreation Dept. "We met Doodle through a clown friend who wasn't available when we needed him. She is on-stage the minute she enters the room, or should I say when she arrives in her Doodle Mobile.

This is one performer who includes all kids in her act, she is so perceptive of each child's personality. By the end of her program, the kids are involved in helping her pack up and chatting about the magic tricks and exchanging e-mail addresses and wondering how her white rabbit got back in the black box."

The Clown Camp is one of the programs coordinated by the PTC Recreation Dept. for middle school and older students. In recent years, the community has appealed to the recreation department to offer summer programs for students who were too old for day camp. This summer there are many opportunities for kids 10 and up to learn about a new hobby or how to play a new sport such as the clowning, photography, art, quilting, judo, volleyball, tennis, basketball, swimming, dancing or even to enjoy a week of field trips to art performances and cultural centers.

All classes are conducted by instructors and recreation coordinators who have undergone background checks and who are CPR and First Aid Certified.

Register for all programs at the PTC Recreation Dept off McIntosh Trail Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the Kedron Fieldhouse Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sun. 1 to 5:30 p.m.

All summer programs and activities are listed on our website www.peachtree-city.org/recreation. Online enrollment is available for a limited number of programs for a small user fee. Call 770-631-2542 for additional information.
