Running club to have meeting about changes to Peachtree By BOB DALTON
Since 1978 the Peachtree Road Race finish area has been in Piedmont Park. The world's largest 10K road race annually attracts 55,000 runners including everyone from some of the most elite to those who are content to walk the course. But all will be affected by the course change this year forced by ongoing construction in the park. What will these changes entail and how will the thousands of participants cope with them? The answers to these questions and more will be discussed by Atlanta Track Club (ATC) Executive Director Julia Emmons when she visits the monthly meeting of the Peachtree City Running Club (PTCRC) on Monday, June 3 as their guest speaker. Her topic will include details on what runners can expect upon finishing the most popular 10K in the world hosted by the ATC every year on the Fourth of July. This annual Independence Day mobile road festival requires a gargantuan effort on the part of thousands of volunteers, city and county agencies, private clubs and emergency services. It is all coordinated by Emmons and her staff. They work tirelessly year round to ensure that no detail is overlooked and in so doing, maintain their reputation of superb organization - one factor that remains unchanged. "This is a great opportunity for anyone in the local area who is signed up for the Peachtree this year to come out and hear about the changes to this year's race from the authoritative source," said ATC President and PTCRC member Valerie Reynolds. "It will be informative as well as entertaining. You don't want to miss it." The meeting will take place at the Wyndham Peachtree Executive Center at 7:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a reception for Emmons at 7 p.m. in the Brooks Room at the conference center. Light refreshments will be served and the public is cordially invited. Phone Bill Werling at 770-460-1425 for more information.
