Christian City will host national fitness event for seniors May 29

Christian City will serve as the official host site for metro Atlanta seniors to gather for the ninth annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day, Wednesday, May 29. An estimated 150,000 seniors at 1,500 sites across the nation will walk, dance, play and learn steps to improve their fitness and health. Last year, 150 seniors attended the free local event, and Christian City is expecting more than 200 seniors this year.

"Be Active! Be fit! Be Healthy!" is this year's theme which incorporates preventive measures such as screenings for osteoporosis, blood pressure and diabetes. Informational booths will cover such topics as nutrition, education, diabetes education, physical therapy balance screening and occupational therapy. A representative from the Fulton County Solicitor's office will be available to offer helpful hints to seniors on how to protect themselves and their investments from unscrupulous solicitors. Ballroom dance instruction and a Big Band dance contest will end the day's festivities.

"This year we developed an informative and educational program focused on preventive health measures, but it also includes fun and energetic activities such as ballroom dance lessons," said Patricia Mitchell, wellness coordinator for Christian City. "The goal of the event is to make sure that seniors know there are different steps they can take to be active, fit and healthy."

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is the nation's largest annual fitness event for older adults and is held the last Wednesday in May as a part of Older Americans Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month celebrations. This year's theme was chosen from more than 1,000 entries in a slogan contest for older adults.
