McIntosh and Starr's Mill still alive in AAAAA title hunt

There are four teams left in the AAAAA girls state soccer tournament and two of them are from Fayette County. McIntosh's Lady Chiefs made the state semifinals by defeating Parkview 5-3 in overtime, while Starr's Mill survived by beating Roswell 3-0. Both McIntosh and Starr's Mill will host games tonight.

McIntosh had a 3-0 lead over Parkview with just under 16 minutes left in the game. Kari Quinn scored eight minutes into the game off of an assist from Tabitha Lowey. Lowey got her own goal seven minutes later off of a corner kick from Dana Van Winkle. In the second half, Jessie Lenze gave the Lady Chiefs a 3-0 lead after knocking the ball past the Parkview goalie.

Then Parkview woke up.

The Panthers scored off of a corner kick, then scored two minutes later off of a break away. Two minutes later they scored off of another corner kick. The score was deadlocked at 3 at the end of regulation, though McIntosh had several scoring attempts at the end of the game.

Quinn scored halfway through the first overtime period with a bullet of a shot. Brittany Jones scored early in the second overtime to ice the victory for the Lady Chiefs.

"It was a tremendous effort against a Parkview team that would not give up," said Coach Stephen Buckner. "Everybody stepped up from freshmen to seniors."

Earlier in the day, Starr's Mill played at Roswell. The Lady Panthers got a solid team performance. Shelley Wegryzyn scored two goals and had an assist, while Lucy Marin added the third goal. Erin Shah and Sarah Burke also had assists in the win.

Starr's Mill will host Brookwood tonight at 7 p.m. Brookwood defeated the Newnan Lady Cougars, 3-0 on Saturday. McIntosh will host Pope, the team that defeated Mcintosh in overtime in the state finals last year, tonight at 5 p.m. Pope defeated St. Vincent's on Saturday, 6-0.

Starr's Mill's boys ended their season on Friday with a loss to Brookwood in penalty kicks. the game was tied at 1-1 after regulation and overtime.
