Fayette recreation facilities: Improve, expand them

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners has now approved the conduction of a Recreation Needs Assessment Study. The study will consist of telephone interviews, random surveys, and public hearings. Conducting this study is a long overdue first step in improving the recreation opportunities and facilities in this county.

Most of our existing facilities are old and in need of immediate repair, if not replacement. The majority of improvements and upkeep are done by volunteers with little money or help from the county. When you compare our recreation facilities to other nearby counties, ours do not come close. It is past time for this county to provide better, safe recreation opportunities, not just for the county youth, but all residents of Fayette County.

Last year when I ran for county commissioner, better recreation opportunities and facilities was on the top of my agenda. I heard from soccer associations, baseball associations and senior members of our community that they would all like to see better opportunities and better facilities.

Recreation does not mean youth activities only. Our most senior residents deserve places and opportunities to get some exercise and engage in other activities. I know there are thousands of people that believe we could and should do better.

I encourage everyone to keep up to date on when the public hearings will be held and show up, in numbers, to make your voices heard. There will be only 1,000 telephone interviews and probably fewer mail surveys, so don't wait to be contacted. Take the initiative, attend the public hearings, and speak up so the county leaders will know what we want and need in this county by way of recreation.
