FCHS Select Chorus has been putting it together for 25 years By MICHAEL
BOYLAN There are a lot of steps involved in putting on a variety show. First there is the conception and development of the show, followed by research and workshopping of ideas, the gathering of costumes, the design of the set, the rehearsals and more. If anyone knows what it take to put on a successful show year after year, it is Janice Folsom, the director of the Fayette County High School Select Chorus. That is why the theme of this year's annual variety show, which is the 25th one done by the Select Chorus, is "Putting it Together: 25 Years." The show will be performed at Sams Auditorium March 21-24. The show combines bits and pieces from past productions as well as some new material, including an original song by Folsom. Some old favorites that will be performed will be "I'm a Believer," "Anything You Want, You Got It," "One Moment in Time," and "With a Little Help From My Friends." There will also be selections from the Broadway musicals "A Chorus Line," "Damn Yankees," and "The King and I." The variety show is company-developed. Students spend many months each year preparing for the show. They work with costumes, props, set design, make up, ticket sales and more. Students from the art department contribute to the show by providing the logo and backdrop design. The driving force behind the show and the Select Chorus, though, is Folsom. She has been recognized as Teacher of the Year for Fayette County High School, served as Choral Chairperson for the Georgia Music Educators Association from 1989-1991 and was one of three finalists in the state to be recognized in the Music Hall of Fame. Folsom is assisted this year by new assistant director Kelly Butler. Butler is the newest addition to the choral department and is a graduate of Shorter College. The Select Chorus is made up of a diverse group of students ranging from athletes to members of the National Honor Society, class officers and various foreign language clubs. This award-winning group of juniors and seniors has performed both locally and internationally and has gained widespread recognition. They received a superior rating in the Large Group Choral Festival, sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association, and will travel to Germany, Austria and Hungary during this spring break. Since this is the 25th annual variety show, the production is very special. All Select Chorus alumni are invited to participate in a portion of the show. For more information, e-mail Terry Bryant at bryant.terry@fcboe.org. "Putting It Together: 25 Years" will be performed march 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and March 24 at 3 p.m. at Sams Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $6 for adults in advance and $8 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased at Pam's Hallmark and By Invitation Only as well as in the Fayette County High School office and from any Select Chorus member. |
