FCHS Sports hall of fame inducts new members

The fourth annual Fayette County High School Sports Hall of Fame banquet saw eight former graduates who excelled in sports inducted into its Hall of Fame. Nearly 200 people attended and also saw three non-sports "distinguished alumni" honored.

Baseball players Billy Carson and Larry Jones golfer Dicky Thompson, wrestlers Jeff Anderson, and Craig Thomas, cheerleader DeAnne Faison Smith, basketball player Daphne Colclough, and basketball and soccer player Kerry Evert are the Hall's newest inductees.

Also honored were the members of the 1964 state championship baseball team, most of whom were able to attend.

Their names were added to 25 previous inductees.

Carson (1960­1964) was a two-year letterman in basketball and a three-year letterman in baseball. In 1962 he had a 5-2 record for the region championship team, throwing the last three innings of a no-hitter with Jim Jackson, a previous inductee. The Brooks native has just retired with 33 years of service with Delta Air Lines and still lives in his hometown.

Jones (1961­1965) was a two-year letterman in basketball and a three-year letterman in baseball. In 1964 he struck out 14 batters in 7 innings for the state championship. He is a native of Fayetteville, married to the former Linda Davis, and they are the parents of two who were also outstanding athletes at FCHS.

Thompson (1971­1975) was a four-year letterman in golf at FCHS and a two-year letterman at the University of Georgia. In his professional career, he won the Atlanta Open, the Georgia State Open and more than 20 tournaments in his career. Reared in Peachtree City, he now resides in Tyrone.

Faison-Smith (1976­1980) was captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, choreographed routines used in competitions, and was named "best all-around" at FCHS, She graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology, where she was on the dance team for one year, cheered for 3 years, and was captain in her senior year. She graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in 2000 and is a member of the Atlanta Hawks Dance Team.

Thomas (1979­1983) was the state wrestling champion in 1983, and also lettered in baseball at FCHS. He was called to Christian ministry and currently serves as a pastor's consultant for Watchman Fellowship. He lives in Birmingham.

Anderson (1983­1987) was a three-time region wrestling champion in the 100-, 114-, and 128-pound weight classes, was the 1987 Tara Classic wrestling champion in the 128 pound class, and winner of the AAAA Georgia State wrestling championship in the 128-pound class. While at FCHS he served as Beta Club president, student government parliamentarian, was a STAR student and valedictorian of his senior class.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1991 with a B. S. in aeronautical engineering and lettered in rugby. He was selected as a "Top Gun" instructor and served in that capacity for three years. He is currently serving on the U.S.S. Roosevelt and is flying combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Evert (1983­1987) was a three-year varsity starter and a four-year letterman in basketball. He was the second Tiger player in the history of FCHS to score 1,000 points, finishing with a career total of 1,124. He led his team in scoring in his junior and senior years, also leading the team in steals (just over 2 per game) and assists (over 3 per game).

He was a four-year varsity starter in soccer and scored 44 goals with 30 assists in his high school career. He was named the Most Valuable Player for offense three years and was team captain in 1987. At Oglethorpe University he was a four-year varsity starter and this May he will be inducted into the university's Hall of Fame. He resides in Fayetteville.

Colclough (1983­1987) was a three-year letterman in basketball. She started 78 consecutive games in her sophomore through senior years and led the team in minutes played. She also served as team captain and as MVP in her senior year. At East Tennessee University, she started 99 of 106 games in her college career, and graduated with a BBA in accounting. She is employed with the State Department of Natural Resources and resides in Jonesboro.
