Cope resigns from Fairburn Baptist Dr. Oscar T. Cope has resigned as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Fairburn after 19 years of service. He will become Associated Missionary of the Western Baptist Association on April 1. The association is composed of 54 churches in Coweta, Heard and Meriwether counties. Cope has served as chairman of the Georgia Baptist Executive Committee for two years and as vice president of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He has served as moderator of the Fairburn Baptist Association, Noonday Baptist Association, and the Mount Vernon Association. He is currently a member-at-large of the state executive committee. Cope recently spent several days at the Tri-State Crematory in Walker County as a chaplain through the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief. He also serves as a chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol in the rank of Lt. Colonel. He has served two years as Georgia Wing Chaplain and is now Deputy Wing Chaplain for the Southeast Region, Civil Air Patrol. Before coming to Fairburn Baptist in 1983, Cope served as pastor of the Milford Baptist Church of Marietta for more than eight years and pastored the Brown Memorial Baptist Church of Wrightsville for more than four years. Cope and his wife, Glennie, have been married 38 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. The Copes will continue to reside in the Fairburn area. |
