Letters from losers: PTC residents must be wary

Wednesday's Page 5 of The Citizen could easily have been headlined "Letters from Losers."

First there was Gary Rower's letter. He lost the November mayoral runoff election by a huge, mandate margin. After reading Mr. Rower's letter we now know what kind of a loser he is: a poor loser.

Second, there was Fred Wellman's letter. When he saw certain defeat in the mayoral election he dropped out, cashing in on the 9-11 crisis for his withdraw alibi. This is the same Fred Wellman that chastised Dan Tennant for criticizing a Peachtree City Council member in print, just like Wellman did to Steve Brown. That makes Mr. Wellman a hypocritical loser.

On Feb. 27 there was the Bill Aleshire letter complaining that he was cut off while speaking at a City Council meeting. Hello? Is anyone home, Mr. Aleshire? The issue he wanted to talk about had been sent to committee and was therefore inappropriate for that meeting, but that fact was not going to slow him down. He had his little speech prepared and he was going to make everyone listen to it.

It is a shame that all this criticism is not about the issues. It is all very personal. Steve Brown was soundly ridiculed for his moratorium idea, but there was not one solitary negative word said about the other three council members who voted for it. Not one word.

The mayor and council are being criticized for doing exactly what the voters sent them to do: keep developers under control to preserve the Peachtree City lifestyle we all bought into and to manage the city using the personal principles we liked enough to elect them.

What have we learned from the first few months of 2002? We now realize that we, as citizens, must attend council meetings to neutralize the special interest groups who flood a meeting to push their personal agendas.

We thought that electing Mayor Brown, et al, would mean that mainstream Peachtree City wishes would be handled without us needing to attend the meetings. Unfortunately, that did not work out. Please attend meetings to support our excellent City Council against special interest groups like the developers and tennis center employees. The city's needs are far above personal interests and personal vendettas.
