BOE, vote for calendar 1

To the Fayette County Board of Education:

I am writing to ask that you strongly consider voting for the proposed calendar number 1. I think starting school one week earlier is not significant, whereas, having a week off during the fall is very significant. My reasons include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. I believe it would be easier on the teachers and the students not to have to endure 15 weeks of school without a break, for reasons mentioned previously on your website: remediation, rejuvenation (stress and burnout) and student achievement.

2. Fall is a beautiful time of year in the Southeast and we could enjoy the wonderful weather during a fall break as opposed to enduring the incredible heat of late summer during that week. Many people may prefer taking a family vacation in the fall so as not to have to deal with the rest of the country traveling at the same time. Rates are cheaper and crowds are smaller.

3. As far as the problem with fall sports, we have that same problem in the spring, with all the sports that start at that time of the year, and spring break, but we work around it.

4. And finally, as far as childcare is concerned, due to the fact that the teenagers will be out at the same time, a solution could be this: parents could work out affordable childcare with a teen interested in making some spending or college money. Another solution could be asking a friend who stays at home to help with your kids, either for pay or in exchange for babysitting. It is much easier to enlist help if it is only for a week, for a teenager or another mom, than for nine or 10 weeks. Also, with preplanning, the recreation centers would offer activities as they do with other breaks and holidays.

One final thought: having a shorter summer, as mentioned in other articles, helps with retention, so as not to spend as much time on relearning.

Please vote for the proposed calendar 1.
