Christian City's Friendship Place schedules Open House March 16

Friendship Place, the Alzheimer's home on Christian City's campus in Union City, will have an open house Saturday, March 16, from 1-4 p.m., to showcase recent renovations that meet the needs of the home's residents.

Unlike other Alzheimer's facilities, staff members say, Friendship Place, a 27-bed facility, has smaller, more exclusive units that allow for a higher staff-to resident ratio, which creates a greater sense of stability and security for the residents. At Friendship Place, the smaller number of residents and greater attention afforded to each creates increased socialization and keeps the residents' minds stimulated instead of making them want to retreat to their rooms.

Residents spend their time with one another engaged in craft projects, Bible study, concerts and other activities led by staff and volunteers. In an effort to maintain this homelike atmosphere, Friendship Place removed a series of rooms and created two additional living room spaces.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, today one in 10 Americans over 65, and nearly half of those over 85 suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Those figures are likely to rise if medical science is unable to find a cure. With Alzheimer's becoming more prevalent, finding a safe, caring environment for an Alzheimer's patient has become a top priority for many American families.

This Saturday, visitors are invited to tour Friendship Place and meet the Alzheimer's Care certified professionals on staff. Light refreshments will be served.
