County tries to shut down rescue service

I am writing this letter in hopes to bring attention to a very devastating matter occurring in Fayette County. I am a new resident and one reason I moved to Fayette County was because I thought the local government was fair to all citizens. I have since learned this is not always the case.

A local feline rescue group named RescueCats, Inc., has been shut down by the county because someone complained to the county that they were not zoned to be operating a shelter.

I am outraged that something like this could happen here. You don't expect these things to happen in civilized areas, but apparently they do.

This group saves cats that would otherwise be disposed of because of their age or other various reasons. They are kept in the garage of the owner's house and volunteers help take care of the cats. A new building has been built outside to house the cats and is very near completion.

I have been trying to think of one negative thing that could be attributed to RescueCats, but I cannot find a single one.

The cats are all tested for feline leukemia, feline AIDS, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, and treated for any other condition before they are adopted. They are not making any noise or disturbing anyone.

The neighbors have offered to give RescueCats part of their land so they will have the five acres needed (according to the county ordinance). However, this is not good enough. The county keeps coming up with more excuses to keep RescueCats from performing the pubic service they have been doing.

I implore you to let your county government know that the citizens of Fayette County do not appreciate their tax dollars being used to shut down a rescue group that has done nothing but help decrease the county's and surrounding area's pet overpopulation and has done so without killing them.
