Students starting to mumble Pledge again Directly following the events of Sept. 11, Americans burst forth with a strong surge of patriotic spirit. Flags were so sought after that retailers could hardly keep them in stock. School-age students wore red, white, and blue to show their support and pride and said the Pledge of Allegiance with a better understanding of the words that were so familiar but never completely appreciated. Although the events of Sept. 11 will never be forgotten, they seem to travel to the back of our minds, and our American spirit is beginning to dwindle again. American flag stickers still adorn car windows, but they somehow have less of a shine. The ardent spirit that Americans showed after Sept. 11 is beginning to dwindle in some ways as students begin to once again mumble the Pledge of Allegiance in the morning. We need to remember to show our pride and spirit at all times, not just during a national crisis. Our freedom to wake up each and every morning and choose what clothes to wear, our freedom to choose what school to go to, and even my freedom to write this very letter should remind us each and every day to be thankful for what we have.
