Some teams get key wins over big basketball weekend
The basketball season has only a few weeks remaining and every game is important as teams jockey for seedings in the region tournament. Last weekend, several teams continued their winning streaks while others struggled against some tough competition. McIntosh had a big weekend. On Friday night they faced Eagle's Landing and on Saturday they took on Starr's Mill. The girls lost both games by two points. They lost to Eagle's Landing 49-47, after leading by four points at the half. They also lost to Starr's Mill 48-46 after jumping out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Starr's Mill took the lead in the fourth quarter but McIntosh tied the game at 40 with five minutes to go. The Lady Chiefs were led by clutch shooting from Haynes Kleimeyer and Lisa Norman down the stretch. Ashley Marine scored 18 points for Starr's Mill while Jenny Norman added 10 points as well as two steals and two blocks. The McIntosh boys built a 40-29 lead over Eagle's Landing at the end of the third quarter and won 55-50. Drew Hartley scored 18 points and Dexter Manley added 17. In their game against Starr's Mill, McIntosh again exploded in the third quarter, surging to a 57-29 lead on their way to a 76-37 win. Scott Prah scored 18 points for the Chiefs while Hartley added 14. McIntosh played at Forest Park last night. Five of their last six games are region games and will be played on the road. Fayette County faced Mt. Zion, Jonesboro on Friday and saw both of their teams win. The girls defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 43-30. The Lady Tigers trailed 8-6 after the first quarter but built a 21-19 lead at the half. Alison Horne and Bonnie Bynum made a number of big shots for Fayette County, increasing their lead in the second half and giving them the win. The boys rode a four game winning streak into their game on Friday and played with confidence. They had a 31-21 lead at the half and a 49-33 lead at the end of the third quarter. Kevin Walker scored 12 points for Fayette County and Kyle Williams had seven blocks as the Tigers cruised to a 58-47 win. Fayette County traveled to North Clayton last night and will play at Evans on Friday. Sandy Creek faced Rockdale County on Friday and Woodward Academy on Saturday. The boys defeated Rockdale 83-46, after building a 44-17 lead at the half and a 70-27 lead at the end of the third quarter. William Belton scored 17 points while Richard Lott added 13 and Sam Young added 10. On Saturday, the boys defeated Woodward, 59-44. The patriots started slowly and found themselves down 23-222 at the half. After making a defensive adjustment, the Patriots regained the lead and won. Belton scored 28 points. Sandy Creek hosted Salem last night. The Lady Patriots fell to Woodward, 42-40 in overtime. Starr's Mill faced Evans on Friday. The boys lost 48-42 and the girls won 61-18. Our Lady of Mercy faced Greenville. The boys lost 70-65 and the girls lost 74-50. Starr's Mill played at Henry County last night while Our Lady of Mercy hosted Calloway. The Bobcats will be on the road this weekend with games at Manchester on Friday and Spalding County on Saturday.
