Rising Starr wrestlers win county middle school championship By MICHAEL BOYLAN Rising Starr's wrestling team hosted the county middle school championships last Saturday and emerged the 2002 county champions. Fayette Middle School, the defending champions, finished third, while Whitewater Middle School placed second. Rising Starr had eight champions out of 17 weight classes. Whitewater had four champions, while Fayette Middle had three, Booth had two and Flat Rock had one. Rising Starr took the first three weight classes. The champions were Kevin Thurber (75), John Donaldson (80) and Derek King (85). Whitewater's Jordan Starin was the champion of the 90 pound weight class wile Rising Starr's Jeff Koziol (95) and Cory Radcliff (100) were also champions. whitewater took the next two weight classes; Jeremy Fowler (105) and D.J. Wright (110). Jeff Patrie of Booth was the 115 pound champion and Rising Starr's Matt Hartpence was the 120 pound champion. There was a tie in the 127 pound division between Rising Starr's Jason Spruell and Flat Rock's Frankie Brand. Fayette Middle captured the next three weight divisions. The champions were J.J. Holt (137), Andy Whittington (147) and Austin Watts (157). Whitewater's Cody Fandt won in the 167 pound weight class, while Booth's Jeff Partlow won in the 185 pound weight class and Rising Starr's Bobby Lampen was the 275 pound champion. All of the county middle school wrestling teams will compete in the MMSAL League championships on Saturday at Union Grove Middle School. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
