Lady Patriots get big win over Creekside in big basketball weekend

Things are looking up for the Sandy Creek Lady Patriots as they got their third win in four games on Friday night. It was also payback as they handed 12th ranked Creekside a 46-45 loss. Creekside defeated them handily earlier in the season.

It was Sandy Creek's defense that set the tone of the game. The Lady Patriots confused Creekside, limiting them to four points in the first quarter and helping to build a 23-16 lead at the half. Sandy Creek kept up the pressure and had a 37-28 lead in the fourth quarter. Creekside came charging back and tied the game with a minute left in the game. Sandy Creek got the ball in Jessica DeMooney's hands and she hit the winning basket at the buzzer. She finished with 15 points and Alyssa Ruff scored 16 points.

Sandy Creek's boys, ranked fourth in AAAA, faced the 14th ranked Creekside Seminoles and lost in double overtime, 60-53. Creekside had a 45-38 lead with four minutes remaining but Sandy Creek came back when Corey Adams scored five consecutive points. William Belton, who finished with 19 points, tied the game with a three pointer and sent it ot overtime. In the first overtime period both teams only scored four points. Creekside took over in the second overtime and emerged with the win. Adams finished with 16 points.

"We shot the ball horribly from the foul line down the stretch," said Coach Richard Francis. The Patriots were 20 for 32 from the free throw line.

Belton was honored at the Atlanta Tipoff Club's monthly meeting on Monday for making the Metro Prep team of the month. Sandy Creek will play at Rockdale County on Friday night and will host Woodward Academy on Saturday.

McIntosh faced Stockbridge on Friday. The Lady Chiefs defeated the Lady Tigers, 53-37, while the boys team lost 67-50. McIntosh's boys had the lead after the first quarter but found themselves down by four points at the half. Stockbridge, currently ranked 14th in AAAAA, took over in the third quarter and held on for the win. Dexter Manley was the leading scorer for the Chiefs with 19 points, while Scott Prah added 10 points.

The Chiefs hosted East Coweta last night. They will travel to take on Eagle's Landing on Friday and Starr's Mill on Saturday.

Starr's Mill traveled to Mt. Zion, Jonesboro on Friday. The Lady Panthers won their game, 52-41, while the boys lost to the Bulldogs, 69-49. Starr's Mill hosted North Clayton last night and will host Evans on Friday before hosting McIntosh on Saturday.

Fayette County had a busy weekend. They faced Eagle's Landing on Friday night and East Coweta on Saturday. The Lady Tigers lost to Eagle's Landing on Friday and then lost to East Coweta, 52-45. The Lady Indians built a three point lead at the half and Fayette County cut the lead to one point by 1:17.

The boys defeated Eagle's Landing on Friday night after three overtimes and then defeated East Coweta 68-44 on Saturday. The Tigers came out strong and built a 34-25 point lead. Josh Burr was the leading scorer with 25 points, 15 of which came from behind the arc. Fayette County faced Forest Park last night and will host Mt. Zion, Jonesboro on Friday night.

Friday night games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with the girls playing before the boys. Saturday's games tipoff at 6 p.m.
