Patriots and Tigers sweep games on Tuesday

Tuesday night was an exciting night for the local high school basketball teams. Sandy Creek's boys got their 15th win of the season, while the Lady Patriots won their second game in their last three tries. Fayette County's boys and girls defeated McIntosh in a county and region showdown and Starr's Mill's boys fell to Forest Park.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots went to overtime against Jones County and won 48-43. They were down 16-6 at the end of the first quarter but chipped away at the lead and kept the game close. Tiffany Paschal was the leading scorer for Sandy Creek with 22 points. She also pulled in 13 rebounds, including a key rebound towards the end of the game that gave Sandy Creek the lead and the win. Tracy Paschal and Jessica DeMooney also delivered big performances on Tuesday night.

"We're making progress," said Coach Jim Waller. "The team's mentality is changing. We're finding a way to win."

Sandy Creek will face a tough contest tonight as they host Creekside. Creekside defeated them handily earlier this season in the second game of the year.

Sandy Creek's boys improved to 15-2 on the year with a 46-39 win over Jones County. The Patriots jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. William Belton netted 18 points for Sandy creek and Bill Crumpler added 12. The Patriots are currently ranked fourth in AAAA and will host 14th ranked Creekside tonight.

McIntosh traveled to Fayette County High School on Tuesday night and saw both their boys and girls squads lose. The Lady Chiefs lost 48-37. Fayette County outscored McIntosh 15-2 in the second quarter and the Lady Chiefs could only cut the lead to eight for the remainder of the game. Fayette County's Alsion Horne was the leading scorer with 18 points.

Fayette County's boys defeated McIntosh 49-45. The Tigers had a 45-34 lead with five minutes left in the game but McIntosh stormed back to cut the lead to 47-45 with 45 seconds to go. The Tigers were able to hang on to their lead and win the game. Jarrett Brown led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points, while McIntosh was led by Scott Prah who scored 14 points. Dexter Manley added 13 points for the Chiefs. McIntosh will host Stockbridge tonight, while Fayette County will travel to take on Eagle's Landing.

Starr's Mill's boys started their game against Forest Park strong, building a 15-4 lead but Forest park came storming back towards the end of the first quarter and cut the lead to 15-11. Forest Park found themselves up by two at the half and took over in the second half, winning 58-39. The leading scorer for Starr's Mill was Gary Kubik with 17 points. Starr's Mill will travel to face Mt. Zion, Jonesboro tonight. All of tonight's games will start at 7 p.m.

In other basketball news, East Coweta's Megan Darrah and Sandy Creek's William Belton were named to the Girls and Boys Metro Atlanta Prep Team of the Month by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Members of the team will be honored at the monthly meeting of the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Jan. 14 at the Cobb Galleria. UGA men's basketball coach Jim Harrick will be the guest speaker.
