Wrestling teams grapple in tournaments
The local high schools had some big wrestling tournaments over the weekend. McIntosh and Starr's Mill hosted tournaments, while Sandy Creek and Fayette County traveled to them. The home team came away with first place in the fourth annual Starr's Mill Invitational. Scoring a team total of 151 points, the Panthers won by 19.5 points over second place Hiram. Tyler Kourajian took first place at 103, winning his first varsity tournament. The rest of the Panther placers were Michael Cosper fourth place at 112, Michael Burke third place at 125, Scott Hartpence third place at 135, Jason McCullough third place at 140, Nick Bennett third place at 152 and Daniel Fuhrman third place at 214. Fayette County placed second in the Brookwood Invitational behind Camden County. James Bouie was the champion of the 275 pound weight division. Second place finishers for the Tigers were Chris Leslie, 215, Will Barnes, 189, and Thomas Lowery, 103. Matt Kellerman placed third in the 125 pound weight division, while Joe Strickland placed third in 171 and Jason Hardwick placed third in 152. The wrestlers who placed wrestled seven matches in the span of 24 hours. It was Bouie's second championship at the tournament, while Lowery and Hardwick got their first varsity placings in a tournament. Fayette County and Starr's Mill will wrestle in the Sandy Creek Christmas Classic this weekend. Matches start at 9 a.m. on Friday. Sandy Creek wrestled in the Landmark Invitational over the weekend and placed ninth. The Patriots only brought seven wrestlers to the meet, four of which placed. Brandon McDowell, 171, placed third, as did Joey Sinlgeton, 130, and Nick Dorsey, 152. Chris Denney, 119, placed fourth. McIntosh hosted their Christmas classic over the weekend. The Chiefs will wreslte this afternoon against East Coweta and Mt. Zion, Jonesboro at East Coweta High School. McIntosh will then be off until a match at home against Wheeler on Friday, Jan. 4.
