High school students will have their Christmas breaks start this week and most athletes will have a tournament either this weekend or next to keep the rust off. Over this past weekend, McIntosh and Sandy Creek's boys got two wins, while the Lady Patriots split.

McIntosh (5-2) defeated Riverdale on Friday, 59-47 and LaGrange on Saturday, 38-36 in overtime. Leading scorers for the Chiefs on Friday were Dexter Manley with and Scott Prah with

Sandy Creek faced Heritage on Friday and won 82-38. The Patriots led the entire game, building a 36-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 46-14 lead at the half. Sandy Creek recognized former standout L.T. Lockett at half time by retiring his jersey. Lockett, a redshirt freshman at Western Carolina University this year, was a three year MVP for the Patriots and is the all-time leading scorer at the school.

The girls were not as fortunate on Friday night, losing 49-45. The Lady patriots tariled 18-16 at the half but had a strong third quarter building a seven point lead with time running out. A Heritage player hurled the ball up from beyond the half court line and sunk the shot, slicing the lead to four points. The shot lifted Heritage and took some of the wind out of Sandy Creek.

"We did some good things tonight but we made too many mistakes at the end," said Coach Jim Waller. "Jessica DeMooney played great defense for us but we had turnovers happen at critical times."

The girls worked their problems out on Saturday, beating Fayette County 45-28. The Lady Patriots held the Lady Tigers to seven points in the first half and controlled the rest of the game to secure the win. Sandy Creek's girls will play in the Dacula Christmas Tournament starting tomorrow. They will also play in the North Gwinnett Festival starting next Thursday.

The Sandy Creek boys were challenged a lot mor on Saturday and even trailed the Tigers in the third quarter. The Tigers committed several technical fouls which gave Sandy Creek momentum to retake the lead and hold on to win, 75-63. William Belton led the Patriots with 25 points, while Josh Burr led the Tigers with 19. Aaron Honeycutt and Bill Crumpler added 14 points and 12 points respectively for Sandy Creek.

The Sandy Creek boys will play in the Griffin Christmas tournament starting tomorrow. Other teams in the tournament are Clarke Central, Avondale, Chamblee and FAMU High School from Florida.
