High schools give performances tomorrow and Friday There will be lots of music at the local high schools tomorrow and Friday. The annual Sandy Creek High School Talent Show will take place Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Commons area. A number of students will be participating in a variety of performances. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. For more information, call the school office at 770-969-2840. The Department of Choral Music at Starr's Mill High School will present its annual Holiday Concert, "Sounds of the Season" on Thursday evening, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Auditorium at the South Complex. The 240 students involved in the choral program's five concert choirs will present a varied concert of sacred and secular choral msuic appealing to all msuical tastes. The annual Holiday Concert has become a treasured holiday tradition and the public is encouraged to attend. Willie Duke Auditorium will be elaborately decorated with festive wreaths, garland, two massive trees and thousands of twinkling white lights, providing the perfect backdrop for the music of this magical time of year. The concert will open traditionally, with Chanticleer singing in darkness Robert Shaw and Alice parker's haunting "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" as the Introit. The auditorium will then come aglow as 240 singers will process into the auditorium carrying candles while singing the Medieval Advent chant Personet Hodie complete with period percussion and handbells. The concert will then progress as each choir presents various sacred and secular pieces of choral music including Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium (Mysterious Nativity), the Burgundian Carol, "Patapan," the traditional favorite, "Carol of the Bells," a novelty arrangement of the "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers," the favorite "Home For The Holidays," and even "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." The second half of the program will feature the combined choirs in "Carols By Candlelight," a 50 minute compilation of traditional carols complete with 12 piece instrumental ensemble. The "Carols by Candlelight" will also be presented by the Starr's Mill Chorus at Walt Disney World on Sunday, Dec. 2 as the choir has been selected out of choirs from all over the world to participate in the EPCOT Center's Candlelight Processional and Mass Choir Concert featuring the Disney Choir, a 50 piece Disney orchestra, and a celebrity narrator, along with the SMHS Choir. Also at the Holiday Concert, a brand new 6'6" Kawai Grand Piano will be dedicated to be used in Duke Auditorium for years to come. Donated through the generosity of 120 grandparents of south complex students the chorus raised $18,000 in their "Grandparents for a Grand Piano" fundraiser to purchase the exquisite instrument. The chorus will also hold a silent auction before the concert and during intermission to raise funds for the chorus's scholarship fund. Goods and services will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with the proceeds being used to provide college scholarships to deserving chorus seniors. The auction will be held in the school cafeteria from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and during the 15 minute intermission with bids being closed at the conclusion of intermission. The Fayette County High School Select Chorus will present a Reunion Holiday Concert, Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Auditorium. The concert will feature the 2001-2002 SelectChorus as well as several alumni who have distinguished themselves in the msic world. A wide variety of holiday music will be presented. Everyone in the community is invited for a fantastic evening of holiday music. Performers include Clay Callaway, Class of '79 singing "Christmas in Dixie," Melia Foley-Lane, Class of '92 playing a trumpet medley of holiday faovrites, Diana Gardner, Class of '89 singing "Sleep Holy Child," Casey Huggins, Class of '93 singing "O Holy Night," Bobby Lacey, Class of '89 singing "O Come Emmanuel" and "Christmas in the Trenches," Laura Scribner, Class of '94 singing "Santa Baby" and "Tennessee Christmas," Chad Terry, Class of '94 singing "All I Want for Christmas is You," and John Waller, Class of '89 singing "Wonder Enough" and "Song of Jabez." The concert will end with this year's chorus and all Select Chorus Alumni performing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Any alumni wishing to rehearse the song may come to the old chorus room next to the auditoirum at 7 p.m. before the concert. All Select Chorus alumni are invited to a reception immediately following the concert. Admission to the concert is $5 and tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Select Chorus.
