Tyrone school handled tough situation with grace

First I send my condolence to [the Tyler Whitfield] family. I can not begin to know the pain they are feeling at this time. I would, however, like to let your readers know the love that was found for Tyler and the other children at Tyrone Elementary School.

My daughter attends the same class as Tyler. On the eve of this accident the room mother alerted parents to the events that occurred so we could prepare our children for the following day. On Wednesday, the children were greeted by two wonderful teachers, Mrs. M. Hall and Mrs. L. Severa. Then to follow were Mr. Pollard, the school principal, and Mrs. Kippa, the vice principal, and the school counselor, Mrs. Smith.

I was not in the room at the time they broke the news to them, but after the discussion, the children were sad but continued their day (of course, not the usual routine).

I give credit to the teachers. It was obvious they were in pain, but the children could approach them for the much-needed hugs and the open ear for the many questions. A special crisis team was brought in to assist the children and staff in helping them cope with this tragedy.

As a parent I was very impressed with the handling of this tragedy that affected us all. I was not able to assist the next day when the children then heard the news of Tyler's death. I do know the way my daughter came home sad but not distressed.

I asked questions about the day's events, and she or my other daughter were ready with an answer. The school staff discussed the death with each class, which I believe helped each student to cope with the news.

My hat's off to staff of Tyrone Elementary for the excellent way they prepared the parents and the students in coping with the loss of one so dear to many. My prayers are with the family and to the many others Tyler's life touched in his short time.

Marie Ledford
