Regular season ends tonight

The regular season of high school football ends tonight and the biggest game for our local teams takes place at Newnan High School's Drake Stadium. Starr's Mill (7-2) will face the Newnan Cougars (7-2) in a win-and-you're-in situation. The victor will head to the state playoffs and the loser will have to start planning for next year.

Both teams have had great seasons. The Panthers have won five in a row and have looked impressive on both sides of the ball. Their defense has been intense, forcing teams to make costly mistakes and the offense has played better week after week. Newnan lost to the Indians last week but has a high powered offense lead by running back Rod Gray. Gray was held to 61 yards last week and may be out to prove something tonight. This will be a battle between two of the region's top teams.

East Coweta (9-0) travels to Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton tonight to take on Forest Park (3-6). The Indians would like to remain undefeated but may be playing without Preston Stricklin who sprained an ankle in last week's game. East Coweta is talented on both offense and defense and will look to this game as a tune up for the state playoffs which start next Friday.

McIntosh (1-8) won their first game of the year last week and they would like to finish the season with a win at home against Morrow (2-7). The Chiefs have had solid efforts in their running game from Cameron Hall and Nick Achor and quarterback Luke Wiggs has made some big plays in the past few weeks as well. Expect a tremendous effort from the Chiefs tonight.

Sandy Creek (3-6) defeated Salem last week after outstanding performances from Kelvin German and Phillip Hyde. German had 177 yards rushing and is 30 yards shy of setting a school rshing record. Fans can expect German to break the record tonight and they can also count on an intense performance from the team as they close out their season at home against Pickens.

Landmark Christian (6-3) is guaranteed a second place finish in Class 5-A. They will also be entering the state playoffs next week and would like to build some momentum with a win tonight against Athens Academy (7-1). The War Eagles got three touchdowns from Dillon Haynes last week in their 30-13 victory over Mt. Zion, Carroll. The team seems to get a big performance every week from a new face and is laying the groundwork for another super seaosn next year as many players will return.
