Panthers vault into first place with a win and a Newnan loss
Starr's Mill regained the lead in Region 4-AAAAA division A, thanks to a win over McIntosh and Riverdale beating Newnan on Friday. East Coweta maintained control of division B with a 46-0 win over Henry County. The Panthers (6-2) defeated McIntosh, 48-21, though both teams got off to a rocky start. Starr's Mill started with the ball and went three plays and out. McIntosh threw an interception on their first play, which was caught by Johnny Edwards. McIntosh Devin Lemons then intercepted a pass on Starr's Mill's second play on their second drive. From then on, Starr's Mill played solidly. The Panthers got touchdowns from Recarta Heard, Kyle Jones and Bobby Clark in the first quarter. McIntosh struck back in the second quarter when Luke Wiggs connected with John King who had an 81 yard touchdown reception. Starr's Mill's Kellan Strain answered right back with a 47 yard touchdown reception. Johnny Edwards made another interception and Rodrigues Heard ran 50 yards for a touchdown. Chris Strauch added the final touchdown of the first half for Starr's Mill with a one yard touchdown run. The score at the half was 41-7. McIntosh would score two more touchdowns, both on quarterback keepers; one by Luke Wiggs and one by backup Taylor Lee, in the second half, while Starr's Mill added one more when backup quarterback Robbie Williams threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Reid Bosworth. Starr's Mill (6-2) will travel to take on Eagle's Landing (3-4) on Friday, while the Chiefs (0-7) will host Stockbridge (0-6). Fayette County played North Clayton on Saturday and won 13-8. It was Coach Clint Burton's 100th career win. Jeff Crisp threw two touchdown passes; one to T.J. Brandenburg for 15 yards and one to Steven West for 17 yards. The Tigers rushing attack was a bit sluggish, only amounting to 67 yards total. Fayette County also played without kicker John deraney. Deraney is expected to return in this week's game. The Tigers (4-4) will play Morrow on Friday at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro. Sandy Creek hosted Woodward Academy on Friday night and lost, 7-0. Kelvin German, wearing Kedric Golston's jersey, ran for 115 yards but couldn't penetrate the endzone. Golston is still in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center with a broken leg and brised lungs but is expected to make a full recovery. Defensively, Riley Swanson made an interception for the Patriots and Drew Duncan recovered a fumble. Sandy Creek (2-4) will travel to take on Rockdale County (3-4). The Bobcats from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School (4-4) continued to find it difficult to score as they traveled to Union Grove High School and were defeated 14-6 in a JV contest Thursday night. Mercy is still missing Sam Etuk, the team's leading rushing, who is nursing a severe ankle sprain, and Jeff Smith, the team's second leading rusher, who has not fully recovered from a hamstring tear. Mercy also had a new quarterback as freshman Chris O'Brien took the snaps for the first time this season. The Bobcats could only muster 50 yards on the ground and finished with 100 total offensive yards. The Mercy defense continued to shine as it was responsible for the team's only score. Matt Gill returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Defensive linemen Todd Benson and Greg Spencer had fumble recoveries and returned them deep into Union Grove territory. Freshman Ryan Sling played another excellent game as he totaled 10 solo tackles. Mercy will host Walker High School in a varsity game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be Mercy's first ever Homecoming Game. The Bobcats defeated Walker back on August 25, 2001, for the team's first football victory in school history. In other games this Friday, East Coweta (7-0) will host the Jonesboro Cardinals (5-2) and Landmark Christian (4-3), which lost to Bowdon last week, will travel to take on Heard County (0-7).
