Don't send food to Afghans

In light of the recent bombings on Afghanistan, the Starr's Mill High School staff has asked students to donate $1 to help feed the children of Afghanistan. The school wants to send a $1,700 check ($1 for each student at SMHS) to Washington, D.C., to be used to help pay for food to be sent to the children of Afghanistan. As a student at SMHS and a citizen of the United States, I refuse to contribute to such a fund.

To begin with, there is no way to ensure that the food will actually reach the starving children of Afghanistan. As is the past, the supplies will probably be dropped in by air. More than likely, the Taliban will confiscate all supplies and use them for feeding their own military. Just this morning Fox News announced that the Taliban seized tons of wheat from a UN warehouse. Therefore, even though our country is in a war against terrorism, we will still be feeding enemy troops.

Second, even if the food reaches the children, they have no way of knowing that the U.S. is helping them. They cannot read the marked bags that say, "United States of America." After the children receive the food, the Taliban will probably make a public address saying that all the food was from the Taliban. They will say, "Look at all we have given you. The U.S. only drops more bombs."

Although it is sad that innocent children have to die in this war, all the blame cannot be set on the United States, and the U.S. shouldn't feel the need to compensate for the destruction it causes overseas. The Taliban began the war as a civilian war, and the war will end as a civilian war. It is unfortunate but true, and not only Afghans will suffer.

Without a doubt, all Americans, all people of the world, civilians or military, are on the battlefield right now, and it's every man, woman, and child for his or her own country.
