Brown, Rapson, Weed: They've done homework

Nov. 6 is a huge day in the history of Peachtree City. It will be a chance for the citizens to regain control. It is voting day.

We have watched our cozy little town sliding down the slippery slope of overdevelopment. We concomitantly have new buildings going up, while an ever-increasing number of retail and office locations sit unoccupied. We have schools that are over capacity almost from the day they are built. And we have the very thing we tried to avoid by moving to PTC: a traffic jam nightmare at Ga. highways 54-74 every weekday.

The last few years our city council could best be described as developer-friendly. Dan Tennant has been the only one speaking for the people of Peachtree City. It has been frustrating for him and the rest of us to consistently be voted down 4-1 or 3-2, but we have an opportunity to give him some help.

There are four candidates for mayor. Dan Lakly is running his name for mayor, but it is a name that was defeated by a Democrat running as a Republican (she voted to change the flag with her buddies instead of letting it go to a referendum). All those Gary Rower signs we see are in the yards of pilots because he is a pilot. If they knew his politics, the signs would come down. He said, at the candidate's forum, that he was in favor of future annexations. 'Nuff said about him. Mr. Murphy, I know nothing about.

Steven Brown is an easy choice for mayor. The amount of time he has spent on meetings, research, classes, and letters related to Peachtree City government is staggering. And all of it as just a concerned citizen. He wants the citizens to have the PTC we were promised, not the PTC that will make the developers the most money. No one wants to pay more taxes, but overdevelopment is not the answer. Hopefully we can give Steve over 50 percent of the vote so that he can immediately begin serving the people instead of having to conduct a runoff campaign.

Steve Rapson is the perfect person for the City Council Post 3 job. Best qualified, best voting record, and best answers for our problems. He has proven his commitment to Peachtree City's roots.

Post 4 needs a new council member. Carol Fritz's votes have frustrated all of us who love the PTC we moved to. Dan Tennant's letter from last week did a good job of profiling Ms. Fritz, but he was much too kind. She has got to go. Pick anyone else.

Anyone attending the candidate's forum had to be struck by the level of preparation of three candidates. It was quite apparent that Steve Brown, Steve Rapson and Murray Weed had done their homework. Even questions on old issues found the rest of the candidates stating, "I don't know," "that's a good question," and "I hadn't thought about that."

We need dedicated public officials who are prepared to do our city's business. There are many candidates, but only three who are ready to give us the Peachtree City we all want and love: Brown, Rapson, and Weed.

Bill Webster
