Volunteer firefighters don't endorse PTC candidates

A recent letter from a union member endorsed a particular candidate for mayor. Many people may assume that this represents the position of the department or a majority thereof. Each individual member is free to exercise his or her constitutional voting rights, just as is every other citizen. However, I believe it is essential to know that this union member does not represent all members, not even a majority of the members of the Peachtree City Fire Department (more than half are volunteers).

The Volunteer Firefighter's Association is a community and public service organization, as is the department. The organization and its members exist to serve the community and its citizens to the best of our ability. An organized labor organization exists for the benefit of its members.

The Volunteer Firefighter's Association does not and will not endorse any specific political candidate. We consider this inappropriate and counterproductive. We will continue to work through our chief with whomever the voters of Peachtree City elect as mayor and council members.

The previous letter writer actually lives in Sharpsburg, and to the best of my knowledge those career members who have chosen to join his organization also live outside Peachtree City.

I would encourage you to vote in the upcoming election based upon your individual assessment of the capabilities and qualities of individual candidates.

Kevin Smith, President

Peachtree City Volunteer Firefighter's Association
