Weed has ability to work with opponents

I am writing in support of Murray Weed, a candidate for the city council of Peachtree City. Having worked with Murray on various Rotary projects, I can say that I know Murray well. I can also say that he has the skills and experience needed to make an effective council person.

One of the things that impresses me the most about Murray is his ability to work with people that have opposing views and build a positive solution. He is unlikely to get involved in the "us vs. them" mentality that we oftentimes see in local politics. As a result, he will look at issues that confront the city on their merits rather than hastily taking absolute positions. Based on this ability, Murray will help resolve the tension between the Fayette County and Peachtree City governments, a goal expressed by each of the Mayoral candidates.

Murray also lives up to his principles. Take his views on annexation as an example. Murray is against rampant annexation. He believes that we should look closely at specific situations and consider annexation only if it is clearly in our best interests. Murray realizes the negative impacts of ill-conceived annexation and he would only support annexation after considering the city's best interests, the neighbors' point of view and all the facts and possible consequences. Murray realizes that reckless annexation will overburden the city's limited resources such as water, sewer, fire, and police services. If this burden is too heavy the quality of life of all the city's citizens will suffer.

I am also impressed with the experience Murray brings to the job. You have probably heard that he is an attorney. What you may not have heard is that his primary area of practice is municipal government. Not only has he regularly attended the Peachtree City council meetings, but he has also attended countless other council meetings as the city attorney for various Georgia cities. He knows how cities work and he knows how to make them work better. He also has experience as an assistant district attorney in Columbus, the second largest city in Georgia.

One idea he has proposed regarding crime and public safety is to put a police substation where the new Home Depot will be built. Not only does that deter crime at that location, but it will decrease response time to the areas that will be affected by the related traffic.

I urge you to get out and vote on Nov. 6. I also urge you to join me in supporting Murray Weed.
