Recent events bring new perspectives on community's differences, similarities

These pages are routinely filled with opinions from many people in our community. It is always intriguing to me to see what is on the minds of people from all walks of life. We are fortunate to have The Citizen to read to gain some insight as to what matters the most in the minds of the citizenry.

Well, we found out last week we all have a lot more in common than we have differences. We most assuredly have different points of view, and thankfully, that will never change. But before anything else, we are Americans. And in my 44 years, I have never witnessed anything resembling the commitment and determination to stand together and defend our country and our freedom as I have this past week.

I wish I were clever enough to say something profound about this disaster that has not already been said. Sorry, but I'm just not that smart. The one thing I am convinced of, however, is that life will never be quite the same again. Ever.

But you know what? That's OK. We are resilient, of course, but we are also adaptable. We will all make do the best we can, knowing our liberties are bound to be modestly curtailed in order to preserve our safety, particularly when it comes to commercial aviation.

We are in for a long and protracted war against terrorism. None of us will ever know for sure when the war ends, or for that matter if the war will ever end. Nor will we know for sure what the score is as we move to eliminate the world's collection of terrorists.

But what I do know is that with God's blessing, we shall prevail. And it is with a united spirit that I encourage all of us to put our relatively petty differences aside, and do what is right by our fellow man.

It is the very least we can do for the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001. May God bless those and their families who were lost that day. And may God bless America.
