Football season gets underway tonight

There are several high school football games tonight, including Fayette County and McIntosh, which has become one of the biggest rivalries in the county.

The Chiefs will travel down Ga. hwy 54 to take on the Fayette County Tigers. Last year's win over the Chiefs was the only win the Tigers had all season, while McIntosh rebounded from the loss and finished 2-8. Both teams are hoping for a more successful season on the gridiron and a win tonight would be a step in the right direction.

McIntosh returns several players including quarterback Luke Wiggs, while Fayette County will be led by new quarterback Jeff Crisp. The defenses of both squads should set the tone of the game. Any mistakes they force their opponent to make could prove costly.

Landmark Christian begins their season at home against Wesleyan. Coached by first year coach Kenny Dallas, the War Eagles are looking to return to the playoffs this year with a better record than last year's 1-9 overall record. The War Eagles return six starters from last year's squad and should have some talented and experienced players on both sides of the ball.

Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School is traveling to Marietta tonight to take on Walker High School. The Bobcats do not have all four grades at their school yet and are playing a mixed schedule of varisty and junior varsity games. The team gets better week to week. They can put some numbers up on the scoreboard and they can play defense.

Sandy Creek also hits the road tonight to take on Shaw. Shaw has beaten the Patriots three times in the last two years and has only allowed one touchdown in those three games. The Raiders were the state champions in AAAA last year and return 11 starters from last year's team. Sandy Creek graduated a lot of players and is hoping that the players filling in those skill positions step up top the challenge. Sandy Creek should have a good defense, led by top recruit Kedric Golston, while the offense is young but experienced.

Starr's Mill and East Coweta are both off this week. East Coweta defeated Starr's Mill 35-14 in the Georgia Dome last Saturday. The Indians moved up to third in the AAAAA rankings, while Starr's Mill fell to 10th. The Panthers will host Fayette County next Friday, while East Coweta faces Stockbridge.
