Expert to discuss Shroud of Turin at PTC Presbyterian

Russ Breault, founder of the Shroud of Turin Education Project (STEP) will present a multimedia program entitled "The Mystery of the Shroud: A Multi-Media Encounter," at the Peachtree City First Presbyterian Church's Men's Fellowship meeting Sunday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. Breault's presentation, using numerous graphics and visuals, will cover all aspects of the history, science, art and theories of how the image on the historic artifact may have been formed.

The Shroud of Turin is a 14-foot long linen cloth kept in Turin, Italy, which bears the faint image of a bearded man with wounds and bloodstains which match those of a crucified Jesus as recorded in the Bible. The cloth remains a mystery despite numerous attempts to find a natural cause for the image.

A team of 40 scientists analyzed it in 1978 and concluded it was not the work of an artist, since there was no significant evidence of paint, pigment, dye or other artistic substances. Others have observed that the image appears to be a negative that becomes positive in a photographic negative. Still others have come to the conclusion that it must have wrapped a human form at the time the image was created.

Skeptics have attempted to prove the cloth was created by medieval artists but fall short of a full explanation. Adding to the controversy were carbon dating tests performed in 1988 which showed the cloth to be only about 700 years old. But critics of these tests claim the protocol was badly managed by using only one sample site as opposed to the three sites originally agreed upon. Critics also say that a fire which nearly destroyed the cloth in 1532 could have altered the carbon date. The mystery continues.

Breault is a noted lecturer and researcher who has been featured on three national documentaries as well as several national talk shows. In addition to founding the project, he also hosts an award-winning Web site at www.shroud2000.com.

The program, to be presented in the Fellowship Hall of the church, is open to the community as guests of the Men's Fellowship. First Presbyterian is at 206 Willowbend Rd. in Peachtree City. For more information, call the church, 770-487-7757.
