David Epps receives 'Chaplain of the Year' award from CEC

Father David Epps of Sharpsburg was recently named the 2001 Volunteer Chaplain of the Year by the Archdiocese of the Armed Forces of the Charismatic Episcopal Church. The presentation was made by the Most Rev. Douglas S. Woodall, archbishop, during the 2001 convocation of the Archdiocese of the Armed Forces in Spartanburg, S.C.

Epps, who has been in law enforcement chaplaincy for 12 years, currently serves as chaplain for the Peachtree City Police Department, Fayette County Sheriff's Department, the Fulton County Police Department (police academy) and the Senoia Police Department. He is a former FBI chaplain, former hospice chaplain, and serves as a chaplain for the Georgia Defense Force. In 1993, the officers of the Peachtree City Police Department voted him Volunteer of the Year.

In 1992, Epps graduated as the top student from the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center and received certification as a police officer in Georgia. In addition, he holds state certification as a general police instructor, defensive tactics instructor, field training officer, and law enforcement chaplain.

He has received basic, senior and master level certification from the International Conference of Police Chaplains and has earned the Certification in Advanced Pastoral Studies in Law Enforcement Chaplaincy from the Academy of Parish Clergy. He is a certified tactical baton instructor, O.C. (pepper gas) instructor, and is qualified at the "master" level with the 9-mm semiautomatic pistol.

A former U.S. Marine and black belt in karate, Epps is a member of the Georgia Defensive Tactics Association, an organization for law enforcement instructors. He has also worked as a child protective services counselor and investigator with the Tennessee Department of human Services.

He has been published in numerous magazines including The Journal of the Fraternal Order of Police, Police Beat Magazine, The Journal of the Academy of Parish Clergy, Leadership Magazine, Seed & Harvest the Journal of Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, The Journal of the Order of St. Luke, and others. He is a contributing editor for Sursum Corda magazine and authors a weekly column for The Citizen newspapers. He is currently a doctoral student at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pa.

He is a member of the Fraternal Order of police, the International Conference of Police Chaplains, the Marine Corps league, The Marine Corps Association, and the American Legion.

Epps has been married for more than 29 years to his wife, Cindy, an assistant professor of nursing at the State University of West Georgia. They have three sons: Jason, an officer with the Peachtree City Police Department; John, an officer with the Senoia Police Department; and James, a linguist serving with the U.S. Air Force.
