St. Gabriel's Catholic Church plans special Holy Week events

The Catholic Church of Saint Gabriel in Fayetteville will celebrate Holy Week along with other Christian churches in the community, beginning with a joint Palm Sunday service with its neighbor, The Episcopal Church of the Nativity.

Members of both churches will gather on the grounds of St. Gabriel's at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 8, for a blessing of palms. Each congregation will proceed to a center point and both groups will pray together, with both pastors participating. At the conclusion of the outdoor blessing, each congregation will proceed to its individual church for the remainder of the Palm Sunday celebration.

Services at the Catholic church will be a normal weekend schedule with a Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m., Sunday morning at 8 and 10:30 a.m., and a life teen mass at 5 p.m. Each Mass on Palm Sunday will begin with the blessing of Palm.

Lent will officially end and the tridium will begin on Holy Thursday, with a celebration of the Mass of the Lord's Last Supper at 7 p.m. Those attending will be invited to wash their feet at this liturgy as they reenact the events Christ did prior to his last supper.

Good Friday activities will begin with a rosary at noon, followed by meditation of the seven last words of Christ at 12:30 p.m. Stations of the Cross will be portrayed at 2:20 p.m., as members walk and meditate on the final journey of Christ. Good Friday services will conclude with the commemoration of the Passion of the Lord at 7 p.m. Veneration of the cross will also take place at this service.

Easter officially begins with the vigil Mass on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The solemn Mass will begin outdoors with the new fire lighted and brought back into the church. Those who have been preparing to enter the Catholic Church also will be welcomed into full communion at this extended evening service.

Easter morning will be celebrated with solemn Masses beginning at 8 and 10:30 a.m., and a special additional liturgy at 12:30 p.m., which will replace the life teen evening mass for this day.

Members of St. Gabriel's invite all members of the community, of any Christian belief, to join in its services. The church is on Antioch Rd. just off Ga. Hwy. 92 South. For more information, call the church at 770-461-0492, 24 hours a day.
