Kenwood Christian/Whitewater to present 'We Behold His Glory'

The fine Arts Ministry of Christ's Church at Whitewater/Kenwood Christian Church, will present the seventh annual performance of its Easter pageant, "We Behold His Glory," on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 15 at 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday performances are interpreted for the hearing impaired.

The Easter musical drama features 100 church members in a presentation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

"The mission of the play is to exalt the resurrected Christ to the watching world and to draw those who know him into a more intimate relationship with him," a spokesperson said.

This year's program is told through the eyes of the apostle John. The part of Jesus Christ is played by Darren Phillips, director of the Small Groups Ministry at Christ's Church at Whitewater.

This will be Phillips' third year portraying the part of Jesus in the Easter program. He says that playing the role of Jesus in his own church is "both humbling and thrilling." He adds that the most overwhelming thing about playing Jesus is the "brutal reality of the cross."

"Even though we are faking it, the harshness comes through," he says. "The cross leaves marks and it gives splinters, which I find for weeks after the play. Even though I am hanging only slightly from my arms against the ropes on the cross, I have often found my fingers numb for days after the program."

Phillips says that's not complaining. "It's just that the reality of the cross is no casual thing. Jesus didn't just come down off the cross and hug everybody, saying 'Good job.' He had to go through the grave and we thank the Lord for it!"

During the program, childcare is available for children ages birth through five years. During Sunday's performance, graded classes and worship are available for children ages birth through fifth grade.

Kenwood Christian Church/Christ's Church at Whitewater is on Ga. Hwy. 85 South, 4.5 miles south of the Fayette County Courthouse. For more information or reservations, call the church office at 770-461-1487.
