The tradition of Fayette wrestlers shining in state competition continued recently, as The Fayette Youth Wrestling Club placed second in the state tournament the group's highest finish ever.

The team is made up of 17 wrestlers from area middle schools, eight of which placed in the tournament. Drake McCoy, who had an undefeated season for the Fayette Middle School wrestling team, stayed undefeated in the club season and the state tournament. McCoy, who wrestles in the 240-pound weight class, pinned every opponent in the state tournament on his way to the title.

Other top finishers included Nick Bennett, who placed third in the 150-pound weight class, Devin King, who placed third in the 90-pound weight class; Ryan Jones, who placed third in the 75-pound weight class; Ron Hynson, Cory Radcliff, Kevin O'Brien and David Thurber. For Bennett, this was his second state medal in as many years. He placed second in the 120-pound weight class last year. It was King's second state medal as well.

"It was a team effort and a great way to end the season," said Coach Frank Bennett. "Our eight placers all worked very hard and their success can be attributed to all of their teammates who worked together and pushed them in practice."

Other wrestlers from the team who won matches in the tournament included Kevin Thurber, Jake Griffin, T. J. Struck, Chris Thrasher, Ben Thrasher, John Bowman and Patrick Kellerman. The club was coached by Bennett, Ron Nelson and Scott Williamson. Dave King, Bruce Ferguson and Richard Penland assisted the coaches throughout the season.
