Fayette Sports Pre-Season Classic heats up

The first week of the high school baseball season is complete and teams are gearing up for the annual Fayette Classic baseball tournament.

Starr's Mill hosted Landmark Saturday and lost 5-4. The Panthers led 4-1 in the fifth inning, but Landmark came storming back.

Landmark was down by one run in the sixth inning. They got a double and then benefitted from an error to tie the game. They got another double in the inning and scored the go-ahead run.

Starr's Mill tried to tie the game in the seventh but couldn't. The Panthers (0-3) had 11 hits in the loss and committed one error.

Andrew Bashakes had two RBI in the game, while Joe Mahfood came up with two hits. Starr's Mill will travel to Sandy Creek for a game Thursday at 4:30. Friday, the Panthers will host Westlake at 4:15 p.m.

Fayette County hit the road over the weekend and played games in Mt. Vernon and Brunswick. The team won all three games and outscored their opponents 40-6.

Last Thursday, the Tigers faced Windsor forest and won 10-3. They played Glynn Academy Friday and won 13-0 and then faced Groves Saturday, winning 17-3.

The team will get back on the field this Friday when they host Sandy Creek in their opening game of the Fayette Sports Pre-Season Classic. Saturday, they will face Douglass at 3 p.m. and Banneker at 6 p.m.

McIntosh played at Sandy Creek last Friday and got into a shootout. Both teams battled back and forth through the third inning. Matt Rast and Josh Collins each scored runs in the third inning for Sandy Creek, while Mahal deCastro hit a two-run home run for the Chiefs.

Sandy Creek then took over, scoring four runs in the fourth inning after several McIntosh walks, three runs in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth inning. The Patriots defeated the Chiefs, 13-6.

Rast was the starting pitcher for the Patriots. He pitched three innings, gave up three runs, two hits and struck out three batters. Griffin Hall came on in relief for three innings, giving up two runs and three hits, while striking out one batter. Tyler Herrin closed out the game giving up one run off of one hit.

McIntosh was scheduled to meet Landmark Monday and will host Griffin Friday. Sandy Creek faced East Coweta yesterday.
