Laker b-ball teams split with Pembroke

Behind a career-high 25 points from Marty Fears, the Clayton College & State University men's basketball team broke a three-game Peach Belt Conference losing streak, defeating the University of North Carolina Pembroke 72-63 on Saturday.

With two games remaining in the season, the Lakers are still in the hunt for a playoff spot in the PBC South Division. The top four teams from each division advance to the tournament.

Leading 27-25 at halftime, the Lakers went on a 16-7 run in the first seven minutes of the second half and took an 11-point lead, 43-32, on a basket by Fears. Pembroke cut the deficit to five points on two occasions in the final minutes, but the Lakers hit 12-of-17 free throws in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

Things were not as good for the Lady Lakers.

Riding a two-game Peach Belt Conference winning streak, the Clayton College & State University women's basketball team dropped its 11th PBC contest of the season Saturday, falling to the University of North Carolina Pembroke 71-55.

UNCP jumped out to an early lead in the contest and never looked back, taking an 11-point lead, 14-3, with 13:55 remaining in the first half. Clayton State cut the first half deficit to five points on a 3-point basket by junior Corinne Harris with 4:46 remaining in the half. The Lady Braves answered, however, and pushed their lead back to double digits by halftime, 42-31.

In the second half, the Lady Lakers cut the deficit to seven points, only to have the Lady Braves go on a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the game. UNCP led 66-49 with seven minutes left in the game.

For Clayton State, freshman guard Jo Kimbrel scored a team high 11 points. Junior guard Sarah Ernest of Fayetteville, and freshman forward Kandace Walker each finished with eight points.

Up next, Clayton State (5-19; 3-11) will travel to the University of North Florida Wednesday. The women will play at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will follow.
